The EICMA (Esposizione Internazionale Ciclo Motociclo e Accessori) show in Milan, Italy, is the pinnacle event for motorcycle enthusiasts, builders, and manufacturers worldwide. Since its inaugural exhibition in 1914, EICMA has been the launching pad for new bikes, groundbreaking concepts, and innovative technology that shape the future of motorcycling.

For those of us at Purpose Built Moto, EICMA isn’t just an industry event—it’s a source of inspiration. It’s where we see the platforms and trends that will influence custom bike building for years to come. The 2024 show was no different, delivering an impressive range of motorcycles and concepts that got us thinking about what’s next.

This year, three of our team members—Tom, Cody, and Tristan—each picked a standout bike that resonated with their unique perspective and riding style. These bikes are more than just machines; they represent the direction motorcycling is heading, offering plenty of opportunities for modification and personalization. Let’s explore the picks and what makes them special.

Tom’s Pick: Honda V3 – Innovation with a Nod to the Past

Honda unveils ICE Concept – A Revolutionary 75° V3 Engine with Electric Supercharger

Honda’s V3 concept was a clear standout for me. It’s not just another bike; it’s a statement of intent. The 75-degree V3 engine paired with an electric supercharger is a remarkable innovation, delivering efficiency and power in a compact package.

What makes this concept even more intriguing is how it was released. Honda didn’t debut a bike, just a platform. Engine, chassis, suspension and wheels. That's it. As a custom builder this gets the mind racing about creations to be built off the back of this bike.

From a custom-building perspective, the potential is immense. The engine’s compact design makes it a perfect fit for minimalist builds, whether it’s a cafe racer, a naked streetfighter, or even a modern twist on a retro sportbike.

The V3 concept has some ties to past Honda’s that I always loved growing up. The VTR and VFR series bikes were often overshadowed by the fireblade series, but if you heard the sound of Honda’s V-engines, you’re an instant convert. We’re all looking forward to seeing more if and when this concept develops.

Cody’s Pick: BMW Concept F450 GS – Adventure in a Smaller Package

BMW Concept F450 GS

As someone who spends most of his time working on choppers, I’m always looking for something different to shake things up. The BMW Concept F450 GS caught my attention because it’s a bike designed for adventure, but it doesn’t come with the size and complexity of larger ADV models.

The F450 GS is built for riders who want to explore without the bulk. It’s lightweight, nimble, and purpose-built for tackling technical trails and backcountry roads. BMW has done a great job of packing their adventure bike DNA into a smaller package that feels accessible without losing any of the fun.

For me, the beauty of this bike lies in its simplicity. There’s just enough technology to enhance the ride, but not so much that it feels overwhelming. It’s a great platform for customization—imagine adding some rugged panniers, a beefy skid plate, and a set of aggressive tires. With a few tweaks, this bike could be transformed into a go-anywhere machine.

Adventure riding is all about freedom and exploration, and the F450 GS embodies that spirit. It’s a bike that makes you want to pack your gear, head out to the trails, and see where the road takes you.

Tristan’s Pick: KTM 990 RC8 R – Built to Race

KTM 990 RC8 R

As the guy behind the camera and the one who’s always thinking about how a bike looks and performs, the KTM 990 RC8 R immediately stood out to me. This bike is everything I love about motorcycling: speed, precision, and raw performance.

The RC8 R is powered by a 990cc parallel-twin LC8c engine, but it’s not just about the numbers. KTM has focused on creating a bike that feels as good as it looks. The lightweight frame, refined aerodynamics, and attention to detail make it a racer’s dream.

What excites me most is the potential to bring this bike to the street. With some custom touches—a clean lighting setup, personalised fairings, and a performance exhaust—it could be transformed into a head-turning, road-legal racer. It’s the kind of bike that commands attention whether it’s parked in the pits or ripping through the twisties.

KTM’s dedication to racing is evident in every detail of the RC8 R. It’s a machine that makes you want to push your limits and see what you’re really capable of on two wheels.

EICMA 2024: A Glimpse Into the Future

EICMA is more than just a showcase of new bikes—it’s a reflection of where the industry is headed. This year’s show highlighted a range of trends, from the continued refinement of internal combustion engines to the growing influence of lightweight and versatile designs.

For builders and enthusiasts alike, events like EICMA are an opportunity to dream about what’s possible. Bikes like Honda’s V3 show us how technology can enhance the riding experience without losing the mechanical soul. The BMW F450 GS is part of a larger trend that sees the entire industry looking to capitalise on the huge inrush on the ADV scene. KTM’s RC8 R reminds us that racing will always have a place in the heart of motorcycling.

At Purpose Built Moto, we’re already thinking about how these concepts could influence our work, and the community as a whole. Whether it’s incorporating their innovations into custom builds or drawing inspiration from their designs.

If you’ve got a favourite bike or concept from this year’s show, we’d love to hear about it. Who knows—your suggestion might just inspire our next project.
