Wiring headaches can turn an exciting motorcycle project into a frustrating ordeal. Enter the brake and tail light splitters from Purpose Built Moto.

What Do Brake and Tail Light Splitters Do?

At their core, our brake and tail light splitters are designed to provide a dimming circuit to your bike's tail lights.

  1. Brightness Control: They allow a single light to operate at two different brightness levels—50% for running lights and 100% for brake lights.
  2. Dual Functionality: Builders can transform a single-function light into a dual-function light through dimming capabilities.
  3. These light may be functional for other LED brake and tail flights of similar power consumption and design, however we cannot guarantee functionality on non PBM branded lights

They can be used with various lights, including our Hollow Tips, Dome Lights, and Omni Lights, providing flexibility in design and function.

How to Install Brake and Tail Light Splitters

Installing brake and tail light splitters is straightforward. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you through the process:

  1. Gather Your Tools: You’ll need wire cutters, strippers, electrical tape, and the splitter. Crimp lugs or soldering gear
  2. Identify the Wires: Locate the wires for your running light and brake light.

By way of crimp lugs or soldering the connections:

  • Attach the output wire (single red wire on one side) to the LED light that you need to split into running and brake light.
  • Red wire to brake switch
  • Yellow wire to running light power source

Secure the Connections: Use electrical tape or heat shrink to secure and insulate the connections.

Test the Lights: Ensure that both the running light and brake light function correctly at the correct brightness levels.

Common Issues and Troubleshooting

While brake and tail light splitters are designed to be user-friendly, you might encounter some issues during installation. Here are common problems and their solutions:

  • Lights Not Dimming Properly: Check the connections to ensure they are secure. Loose connections can cause improper dimming, commonly there can be an issue with old brake switches.
  • Reverse Current Issues: If the lights stay on when they shouldn’t, recheck the wiring to ensure the splitter is installed correctly.
  • Inconsistent Brightness: Verify that the power source is stable and provides a consistent voltage, make sure you are only using 1 splitter for 1 light

Brake and tail light splitters from Purpose Built Moto are essential to making your PBM 3 in 1 lights operate as intended. providing a dual brightness control and transforming single-function lights into dual-function units. Whether you’re using them for our 3-in-1 lights, our LED Strip Tail Lights, or our new omni lights, you’ll find them indispensable for a clean, professional, and safe lighting setup.
