Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride 2017 Gold Coast

What’s better than jumping on your bike and going for a ride? Maybe putting on a suit for a bit of a laugh and going for a ride? What about doing just that with nearly every rider in your city? Maybe you should sign up for the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride….Every year in late September, riders from around the world come together in their Sunday best to raise money and awareness for men’s health. In conjunction with the Movember Foundation, the Gentleman’s Ride helps boost awareness and raise funds for prostate cancer research along with many other facets of men’s health.

Maybe I’m a little biased however I can’t think of a better place to take part than my home on the Gold Coast. Late September is starting to get a little tropical in Queensland but our beautiful city that runs parallel to some incredible beaches always turns on the sunshine and a nice sea breeze to help those old air-cooled beauties get out for a bit of show and tell. Always providing a colorful selection of vintage, classic and modern retro rides along with their equally as colorful owners and riders.

In 2017 I (Tom from Purpose Built Moto) was lucky enough to be tasked with helping bring together the Gold Coast Event along with Mark Wemsyss (an original Gold Coast DGR rider + organiser) and the teams from our 2 pole venues Sandbar Surfers Paradise and Iron and Resin Garage Currumbin.

As the bikes started to roll into Sandbar for coffee and Breakfast – Maybe a few beers too – the crowd of over 400 spent some time gawking at some of the old machines that get dusted off for the event, and socializing with a huge amount of like-minded enthusiasts. Everything from 1930 Indians, Classic Ducati’s right through 70’s/80’s model Japanese Racers and the everpresent Late Model Triumph Bonneville showed out for the day and Riders young and old did their best to keep with the “Roaring 40’s Mad Men” dress code.

As the Ride rolled out with the lead of Bruce of Iron and Resin on his American Import Kawasaki Police bike, a sea of Custom Café Racers, Bobbers, Scramblers, Choppers, Vintage Scooters and Classic race bikes wormed their way down the Gold Coast Glitter strip and headed south down the beach. Making our presence and hopefully our cause known.

For those that registered for the day, and showed out to ride thanks for the great effort, its so epic to see some of the handcrafted machines and the love for the community take a front seat for the day. To all those that donated and supporters of the Gentleman’s ride thank you as well! And for those that missed out, we’ll hopefully see you next year!
